well as over 20,000 of the most frequently used compounds which kanji create when combined. In contrast to many kanji dictionaries, The Kodansha Kanji Learner's Dictionary is eminently user-friendly. First of all it makes looking up the kanji much faster and easier than the frustrating and time-consuming traditional method (using four patterns instead of 214). Secondly, it arranges kanji and their compounds according to core meanings (printed in red), rather than just stringing them out as most dictionaries do; this method helps the student to see how the individual meanings of kanji are interrelated and how they produce the meanings of their associated kanji compounds. Thus The Kodansha Kanji Learner's Dictionary is not only a means of finding the English equivalents of kanji but also of gaining a greater understanding of how kanji function. In addition to these key features, the dictionary provides many other tools to ease the life of the student. In all, there are five different ways to look up kanji, each with its own use. There are guides on the comers and margins of each page to facilitate the locating of a particular kanji. Easily confused kanji are cross-referenced for ready comparison. The stroke order of each kanji is given in sequential frames. The frequency with which each kanji appears in Japanese newspapers is indicated. For computer users, JIS and Unicode numbers are also given.
