England. They were amassed by Cardinal Mazarin, who bequeathed them to Louis the XIV in 1661 and were later passed on to Louis XV and XVI. In 1792, they were stolen, though seven were returned and remained in the French Court through the Napoleons. These remaining Mazarins were then sold during the Third Republic’s crown-jewels auction; however, four of them were switched for ersatz replicas by Philippe Le Courbure, the auction’s organizer. Le Courbure sold them to a sugar baron in Santiago de Cuba, where they remained in obscurity until Castro’s revolution inadvertently brought them to Florida, where Kelly O’Neill – Sinn Féin’s brilliant fundraiser and Mick Keagan’s one true love – locates them 138 years after their theft. The team – Mick Keagan, Kelly O’Neill, Niles, and Teal – follow the diamonds to New Orleans, where they will again be auctioned. Won briefly by Abdurrashid Al-Kadari, a Saudi arms dealer, they change hands, only to be curiously and subtly returned to France as though they had never left.
