With the rare exception of people fortunate enough to have a job they are fulfilled by and enjoy, time spent at work is an unpleasant trade-off to obtain basic necessities such as food and housing. For most, work is a fifty-year fugue of resentment, sadness and occasional joy, during which people occasionally stop and wonder where their lives went; time spent at work is a series of murdered years. Naming and examining the amorphous pain, frustration and hopelessness of work, THE MURDERING OF MY YEARS demands that the reader stand up, assert their humanity, and understand that work as we know it is neither a natural nor incontrovertible state of affairs. Here, artists and activists talk about the jobs they've had, how they were initially politicised, the nature of their art, and how they feel about working (or resistance to working) in a political context. The twenty-plus contributors' opinions and stories are revisited again and again in response to different questions, so that the cumulative effect of the book is that of a chorus of outrage.
