Office of Naval Research (ONR), and the Navy Warfare Development Command. Elements of their important research, which has frequently extended well beyond the specific needs of the U.S. Navy, include materials, radar, rockets, oceanography, astronomy, space systems, nanoscience, fleet and ship innovations and improvements, sea shield and sea strike programs, sensors, bioengineering, and even neural computation. The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) is famous for its wide-ranging research. NRL is the corporate research laboratory for the Navy and Marine Corps and conducts a broad program of scientific research, technology and advanced development. NRL has served the Navy and the nation for nearly 80 years and continues to meet the complex technological challenges of today's world. NRL has made many distinguished contributions to military science and technology and to the transition of that science and technology to practical application. Systems - Information about historical achievements in radar, communications and navigation systems. Rockets - Ground breaking NRL achievements in early space programs. Solar & Lunar Studies - A look at fifty years of NRL research on phenomena associated with the sun and recent landscapes of the moon. Astronomy - NRL achievements in the fields of astronomy and cosmic ray physics. Ocean & Environment - Accomplishments in ocean research, ozone studies, meteorology and storm prediction. Materials - NRL materials that have shaped the way we live and build towards a better future. The Office of Naval Research (ONR) sponsors science and technology in support of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Founded in 1946, ONR today funds work at more than 450 universities, laboratories, and other organizations. From oceanography, advanced materials, sensors, and robotics to biomedical science and technology; from electronics, surveillance, and neurotechnology to manufacturing technology and information science; from advanced combat systems to other technologies for ships, submarines, aircraft, and ground vehicles-work ONR sponsored has produced the laser, the Global Positioning System, 50 Nobel prizes, and thousands of other discoveries and products used every day around the world. Navy Warfare Development Command - The NWDC Concepts Development Department introduces new concepts to the fleet, harvests fleet ideas, and generates comprehensive dialogues to fully explore each concept's merits. In doing so the NWDC Concepts Department collaboratively develops products with selected experts to ensure that our products incorporate Fleet feedback, recommendations and perspectives. By keeping the Navy informed and engaged, both NWDC and the fleet will realize real war fighting benefits as concepts transition to doctrine, organization, training and equipment. The Navy Tactical Development and Evaluation (TAC D&E) Program is the principal means for addressing the Fleet's current tactical/doctrinal concerns. This program provides management, coordination, funding, contracting and quality control for Fleet sponsored projects that develop tactics, techniques and procedures (NTTP's) for naval forces.
