Sadly for Jeffrey, reconciling MBC's two main characteristics - friendliness and the competitive spirit - can be fraught. It is especially so as tension mounts in the final rounds of the Kelsey Cup competition, 2010-2011. Because discord at the Club is inextricably entwined with domestic strife, particularly in the case of three married couples - Jeffrey’s best players as it happens – Weatherbys, Swansons and Rushworths. So complex and passionate are the conflicts involved that Jeffrey - with his Club threatening to implode - is driven to admit to his best friend, Helga, about the gaps in people's lives he is trying to bridge: 'All I seem to be doing is creating them.'
