College.†They’ll beam and congratulate you, and if they are anything like the typical relatives, in a few months they’ll ask you how you like it up at Swarthmore, or was it Sagamore? For some, Skidmore’s name is unfamiliar, but its prestige is on the rise. As a private liberal arts school, Skidmore is a far cry from the average state university. It is a small school—perhaps even the same size as some high schools. However, this is part of what makes Skidmore unique. The student body is like one big family; there will be those you can’t get enough of, those you grow to love, but also those that remind you of the sarcastic uncle or alcoholic aunt that nobody gets along with. Skidmore is divided into many different niches of people and this allows almost anyone to fit it somewhere. It offers an environment that guarantees at least one familiar face anywhere you go. To some, this is comforting. To others, it may be frightening. College is definitely a chance that life gives you to start over. You can be anyone you want to be once you get to school. Although, once you’re at Skidmore for a while, people will generally know you. They may not know the real you, but it’s highly possible they will know your face, and if you develop some sort of bad repuptation, you may even get a nickname: “Hey, there goes Drunk So-and-So.†But don’t let this discourage you. Just be yourself. College is meant to be a learning experience both socially and academically. If you’re interested in attending Skidmore, you’ve probably been on the tours and read the brochures and have a pretty solid idea of what the school can offer you. But the brochures and the tours never give you quite the whole picture. It is often said that happiness can be found in life’s little details, and this book is all about the little details of life at Skidmore College. The more you know, the better chance you have not only of finding a college that is a good match for your, but also of being prepared if you do decide to attend.
