Designed initially for homeschoolers attending class voluntarily, this book is both effective and fun. Although it is a mistake to take the SAT without having studied the exam itself, test-taking strategies, knowing when and when not to guess, how to eliminate many incorrect answers, how to manage time, etc., these tactics can only improve scores up to a certain point and are no replacement for knowledge of the subject. The College Board has designed the SAT specifically to measure verbal and mathematical skills and to minimize the efficacy of test-taking formulas. "SAT Practice" focuses specifically on the vocabulary, grammar, style, and writing skills that the SAT measures, and these are reinforced with reading comprehension and grammar quizzes, and writing projects akin to those found in the SAT. The reading selections in this work expose the student to a concentrated dose of SAT level vocabulary presented in context, a quantity otherwise encountered only by reading dozens or perhaps hundreds of works of literature. Rereading the short selections and taking the comprehension quizzes will help the reader to incorporate these terms into his or her active usable vocabulary. Studying the language notes and doing the writing exercises provide practice using the terminology and the varied sentence structure that examiners are looking for.
