in the development of "Ideas," the lessons focused on creative paper-and-pencil activities, but as the reform movement in mathematics education began, the use of manipulatives became an important part of the lessons. Starting in 1989, the lessons incorporated communication, connections, reasoning, and problem solving. The forty-seven lessons from the 1991 1994 Arithmetic Teacher journals in this book have been selected as appropriate for grades 5 8. The book provides student activity sheets and teacher directions in an easily reproducible format, along with corresponding family activities and data sheets.
