Indeed the latter group of essays, apparently written in the 1750's, although not published until 1795, moved J.A. Schumpeter to remark that "Nobody, I venture to say , can have an adequate idea of Smith's intellectual stature who does not know these essays" and to describe that on astronomy as the "pearl of the collection.
