It is an abridgment of the acclaimed Second College Edition of WEBSTER'S NEW WORLD DICTIONARY, and the entries have been carefully selected to include all the commonly used words that make up the basic vocabulary of English. In addition, a selection of the more frequently encountered specialized terms used in the sciences, the arts, business, and the professions are included, as well as the more common abbreviations and foreign words and phrases often found in English writings.A special feature of this work not included in other dictionaries of its scope are the little word histories, or etymologies, that lend interest to the entries and often help put the current meanings of the words in sharper focus. Also included in this book are a number of useful reference supplements identified in the list of Contents below.The type for this dictionary was created on the Fototronic CRT Typesetter, controlled by a Univac 1108 computer at Chi Corporation in Cleveland, Ohio. The typefaces used were 7 point Century Schoolbook and 8 point Helvetica Medium. The database for the dictionary was created and maintained by the publisher's staff in his own office using a video editing terminal connected via phone line to the Univac computer
