challenges for a successful transition to becoming a college student.   Cornerstones for First Generation Learners is designed to address the specific needs of first generation students and offer confidence and comfort to those who are unsure of what to expect. It provides advice on how to communicate and seek support from family, friends, community, and peers. First generation students are taught how to utilize on-campus organizations, counseling/academic centers, and service learning. They are given information to help manage finances, set priorities, and improve listening skills, reading ability, note taking, and test preparation skills. It also guides first generation learners on how to overcome negative emotions, doubts, and lack of basic skills. Most importantly, first generation students are coached to be resourceful, practice resilience, and focus on achieving their goals.
