The first two chapters of the text are devoted to a discussion of crucial institutional matters, and the remaining five chapters deal with substantive issues in constitutional law including federalism, seperation of powers, due process, freedom of speech, press, and religion. Introductory chapter essays provide students with an analytic overview of each topic. Case introductions provide students with necessary facts and context to understand cases. After each case, an "aftermath" is provided that tells students how the case affected the development of the legal system, and what its outcome meant to the original litigants. Brief biographical sketches, accompanied by portraits or photographs, are included in the Supreme Court justices who wrote the opinions in the cases selected (35 throughout the text).
